What is a Postpartum Doula?
A Certified Postpartum Doula (PCD) is trained and educated through DONA International, the largest and most respected doula association in the world. She is qualified to work with your family after the birth of your child(ren) and may offer education about newborn care techniques, mother care, partner and sibling adjustment, postpartum mood disorders, breast and bottle feeding, and coping skills. She may also be able to assist with your family’s daily needs such as organizing the home, preparing light meals, running errands, and providing additional local resources.
I am a Certified Postpartum Doula; my work is to care for your entire family during the newborn period so that you may gain the confidence, skills, and resources needed to build a strong and successful family foundation.

Who needs a Postpartum doula?
- First time parents - learn all about baby’s needs from nursery set up to bathing to sleeping
- Second or more time parents - learn how to help siblings adjust to the new baby; learn how to make time for your selves and your relationship
- Parents who are expecting twins or higher order multiples - learn how to deal with multiple infants’ needs as well as logistics
- Parents who have adopted - learn how to integrate baby into your life
- Family members - learn how to help baby and parents as well as yourselves
- For anyone who is looking to gain self-confidence, education about parenting and newborn care, efficient feeding techniques and/or coping skills, a postpartum doula is for you!
What about Dads?
Dads can often feel overlooked during the postpartum phase since so much attention is spent on the recovering mother and new baby. However, Dad is an essential member of the family and can do much more than change dirty diapers! The job of the postpartum doula is to assist all members of the family so that they have a positive postpartum experience. I can help guide Dad as he transitions into his new role; I can offer practical suggestions or a listening ear and can help alleviate the pressure of having to take care of mom and baby. I can answer questions, ease concerns, and help you to find special ways to bond with your newborn and partner.
While doulas can do similar tasks, Dads are irreplaceable!

What is a CLC?
A Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) is a person who has been trained and educated through the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP). She can help you succeed with breastfeeding through education, evidence-based information, and constant support and encouragement. I am a CLC; for more specific information, please see the Koru Care Lactation Services Package.
Can you help me with breastfeeding?
Absolutely! As a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), I have the training and experience to help you achieve breastfeeding success.
How does the process of hiring a doula work?
The process usually begins over the phone; I get to know you and your expected needs, and you get to ask any questions you may have. Once we have established if I could be the postpartum doula for you, then we schedule a consultation to talk more in detail and complete intake questionnaires. After that, a letter of agreement is signed, confirming that I will provide services for you and your family, and then, after the birth of your child, we begin our work together!
How much do you charge?
The typical rate for a postpartum doula in this area is $30/hour. However, I believe in the practice of “A Doula For Every Woman Who Wants One”; if finances are a concern, please let me know and an alternative arrangement can be reached.
Will insurance pay for your services?
As of October 1, 2009, certified birth and postpartum doulas are now able to be assigned provider numbers to submit claims to both Medicaid and third-party payers for services. While this does not guarantee you will be reimbursed for doula services, having a provider number helps insurance companies process submitted claims more easily. It is always recommended that you submit a reimbursement claim for doula services to your individual insurance company.
What is a Koru?
The koru is a fern bud; as it opens it brings new life and purity into the world. It embodies peace, tranquility and spirituality along with a strong sense of regrowth or new beginnings. Interlocking Koru shapes also represent the strength of loving relationships within a family. My hope is that the Koru, which links love and new beginnings within the circle of life, can inspire you during this time in your lives.
